Welcome from Richard Casey
SHAL Board Chair 2018
On behalf of our dedicated Board of Directors and staff, I welcome you to SHAL on the web. We want this website to be a relevant valuable resource to the homeless members of our community and those who care for them.
SHAL is committed to improving the quality of life for all members of our community.
We focus on providing direct services to homeless people here in the Florida Keys. We are here to help you, a family member, a friend, or any homeless member of our community begin the journey to a home. It is much harder to overcome homelessness if you are tired, hungry, sick or have no income.
Through our SHAL Shelter Program, which we operate for the City of Key West, we can provide temporary emergency shelter to begin the journey back from the streets and mangroves. The Shelter operations focus on being a quiet, safe place for a homeless person to prepare for another hard day, and offers programs to treat substance abuse, nursing programs, job referral, and both an in-house breakfast program and dinner through our partners at St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen.
Through our SHAL Outreach Program, our caseworkers can provide many services. For example, they can help those who qualify obtain:
- proper identification
- references to local programs that treat medical, alcohol and substance abuse problems
- disability benefits
- job-related resources and referrals
- an education program and help in opening a bank account to help you prepare to
- move into permanent housing
- when we have the funds available, transportation assistance home to live with family members or to enter assistance programs back home, and
- when we have the funds available, a rental assistance program.
Assistance for specific needs is also available directly from other providers in Monroe County. Our excellent Case Managers can assist with referrals to all of the Monroe County Continuum of Care programs.
SHAL also has a community education program, where staff & board members work with groups and leaders to better understand homelessness in our community. We welcome the opportunity to meet and speak before groups and associations in Key West and Monroe County.
